These booklets contain work guidelines that parents and supervisors can use to assign age and ability appropriate tasks to youth working in agriculture. They also provide information and talking points for adults to use when discussing farm tasks with youth. In addition to the work guidelines, the booklets describe how to use the guidelines and include important supplemental information on topics like supervision, child development and considerations for hired youth.
Hired Youth
Employers and supervisors of youth hired to work in agriculture have many responsibilities to safeguard the health and wellbeing of their employees. These include assigning work consistent with a youth’s abilities, addressing hazards and following child labor regulations. Additional information is available in the Safety Guidelines for Hired Adolescent Farm Workers (SaGHAF). The SaGHAF document includes guidance for training and supervising young workers, information on federal child labor regulations and links for accessing state child labor laws.
